“You’ll never plow a field by turning it over in your mind”, Irish proverb.
We can all find other things to do instead of just getting started and it is a perfectly natural part of the process. We call it the ’clearing out your pencil case’ phase, when you suddenly need to get all your kit in order, you can’t start because you must have 10 highlighters, 6 sharpened pencils and 3 new notepads, oh and that cupboard is looking messy so I better sort that first…sound familiar?
Time to swap ‘I will think about it’ to ‘I will get on with it’. Yes, it really can be as simple as that. Study stress and pressure is mostly felt when we are putting it off and not doing it, and wasting our time thinking about it. The great news is that when you switch to action you feel amazing, and you start making progress.
Here are our top tips to get you started:
- Set a deadline – Get you exam date booked in, the motivation kicks in once you have a date to work towards
- Create a study plan – Work back from your date and split the syllabus areas into manageable weekly chunks
- Tell people and get them on board to support you – Your work, your family and even friends so they know that it is important, and you need the time
- Use the resources available – Discussion forums are great to get help with questions and to collaborate with fellow students
- Make it fun – OK I know that sounds far fetched BUT mixing up your study methods with videos, quizzes, practice and discussions keeps it motivating and dare I say enjoyable!
Go on, let you study journey begin and who knows where it will take you.
